Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Tufts

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team split its doubleheader with Tufts Saturday at Alumni Field, falling in game one 6-2 before taking game two, 6-3.

Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 11-5 on the season, including 4-2 in SCIAC play.

Sagehens 2, Tufts 6 (7)

Greg Pierantoni drove in the Sagehens' only two runs in game one, going 1-3 from the plate with an RBI double. Jack Gold posted two hits while Cooper Berry added one. Jake Hilton was assigned the loss despite striking out four in 4.1 innings of work from the mound.

After being held scoreless the first two innings, the Jumbos took a 3-0 lead in the third with a pair of RBI singles and a sac fly. Tufts added a run in the fifth off another sac fly before scoring two more in the sixth with an RBI single and one run off an error, going up 6-0.

Pierantoni notched his RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, sending one to right field to score Berry and Gold. But it wasn't quite enough, as Tufts held on for the 6-2 run in a game that was decided beforehand to go seven innings.

Sagehens 6, Tufts 3

Pierantoni again led Pomona-Pitzer in game two with a team-high two RBIs after going 2-4 from the plate. Gold and JC Ng each added an RBI for the Sagehens. Jack Wiessinger tallied the win from the mound after allowing just one run and three hits in 6.0 innings while striking out five. Ethan Collins earned the save with a pair of strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.

The Sagehens got out to a quick 5-0 lead with a big second inning. Ng earned an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before William Kinney scored on a wild pitch. Gold then singled through the right side to drive Legg home and Ng scored on another wild pitch. Pierantoni then sent Gold home with an RBI double to right center, putting Pomona-Pitzer up 5-0 through two innings.

The Jumbos got on the board in the sixth with a solo homer before adding two in the seventh with a runner scoring on a hit by pitch and an RBI, making it 5-3 Sagehens. But Pierantoni added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, singling through the left side to drive Gold home and give Pomona-Pitzer a 6-3 lead.

Collins fanned a pair of batters in the top of the ninth before Jimmy Legg recorded the final out with a ground ball to first, as the Sagehens came away with the 6-3 win.

Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will take on Tufts in the final game of the two teams' three-game series tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 16, at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
