Sagehens Pull Off Comeback To Sweep Whittier

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Whittier 14-11 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game at home.

Season Impact: With the pair of wins, the Sagehens are 8-2 overall and 4-2 in SCIAC conference play.

Game 1:

Kylie Liu and Deven Waddell led the Sagehens in hits, Liu went 3/4 and Waddell went 3/ 5. Marie Milton hit her first collegiate home run and Violet Burnham had three RBIs on the game, also hitting a home run. 

Wasting no time, the Poets put up five runs in the top of the first from a series of clutch hits and Sagehen defensive miscues. Despite the early 5-0 deficit, the Sagehens responded with four runs in the bottom half, capitalizing on two errors and RBI hits from Bella Carreon and Morgan Groves. In the second inning, the Poets extended their lead adding six more runs however, the Sagehens steadily chipped away, starting with solo home runs from Marie Milton and Violet Burnham in the second. They continued their comeback in the fourth when Burnham got on base off of a fielder's choice then made it to second on a single to left field by Emily Hurtado. Carreon and Summer Gibson were both hit by a pitch back to back to bring in another run. The momentum shifted fully in the later innings, as the Sagehens put up a five-run sixth inning. Carreon got things started with a double down the right field line then Jiselle Nguyen brought her home on a clutch single to center field. Right after, Waddell also hit a double to center field that scored another run. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Burnham hit a single to the shortstop to score Nguyen and Hurtado's RBI double to left center capped off the scoring, securing a 14-11 comeback victory for the Sagehens.

Audrey Reimers picked up the win in the circle and Nyla Springer collected the save.
 

Game 2:

Devin Waddell led the Sagehens in hits going 3/4 with one RBI and one stolen base. Summer Gibson led the Sagehens in RBIs with two. 

The score remained 0-0 until the fourth inning when the Sagehens got on the board first putting up four runs. The scoring began when Summer Gibson reached on an error by the catcher, allowing Emily Hurtado and Violet Burnham to score. Brooke Bullis then delivered an RBI single to left center, scoring Gibson. Later in the inning, Waddell came through with a clutch RBI single to center, scoring Bullis to extend the lead. 

Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning but the Poets managed to get one on the board in the top of the sixth, making it a 4-1 ballgame with the Sagehens on top. The scoring stopped there and the final score of the second game was 4-1. 

Waddell picked up the win in the circle for the Sagehens.

Up Next:  The Sagehens will take on Manhattanville University at home for a double-header on Tuesday (3/11). First pitch is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. PT.
