Sagehens Split With Manhattanville University

CLAREMONT, CA. - The Sagehens split the double header with Manhattanville University. In the first game, the Sagehens lost 1-7 and in the second game, the Sagehen's bats got hot and they won 14-6.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens are 9-3 overall and 4-2 in conference.

Violet Burnham (1-for-3, 2B, Run), Summer Gibson (1-for-2), Jiselle Nguyen (1-for-2), and Brooke Bullis (1-for-2) led the way offensively for the Sagehens. Devin Waddell pitched 4.2 innings and struck out three batters. Nyla Springer pitched in relief and pitched 2.1 innings, giving up zero hits and struck out four batters.

The game began as a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to generate offense. Manhattanville was held hitless through the first three innings, while the Sagehens managed just one hit but was unable to push a run across. Manhattanville finally broke through in the top of the fourth. Multiple errors made by the Sagehen defense brought home the first run of the game. After the fourth inning, Manhattanville had a 2-0 lead. They added four more runs in the fifth, again due to the miscues made by the Sagehens' defensive struggles. Manhattanville extended their lead to 7-0 after the fifth inning. The Sagehen offense remained stagnant until the seventh inning. Burnham led off with a double and later came around to score on a wild pitch after Audrey Reimers struck out but reached first. However, Manhattanville shut the door, stranding two runners to seal the 7-1 victory.

Game two:

The Sagehens went off for 14 runs on 15 hits, including three home runs, to secure a dominant 14-6 win over Manhattanville. A six-run fourth inning was the turning point as the Sagehens pulled away after Manhattanville had tied the game at 3-3 in the third. Kylie Liu (3-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), Violet Burnham (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 SB), Devin Waddell (HR, 2 RBI), Morgan Groves (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Sophia Roberts (2-for-4), and Heather Hennigh (HR, 2 RBI) led the offense for the Sagehens.

The Sagehens struck first in the opening frame when Burnham delivered an RBI single to bring home Waddell, giving the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead in the second as Hennigh launched a two-run homer, making it 3-0. Manhattanville responded in the third inning after crushing a three-run home run to even the score at 3-3. The Sagehens took control in the bottom of the fourth. Waddell led off with a two-run homer, followed by a two-run blast from Liu. Later in the inning, Bullis delivered a clutch two-run double, capping off a six-run rally that put the Sagehens ahead 9-3. Manhattanville was able to score two more runs, cutting the deficit to 9-6 but the Sagehens responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth. Burnham delivered a two-run double, Groves followed with a two-run double of her own, and Natalie Murguia capped the scoring with an RBI double to give the Sagehens a 14-6 lead which ended the game in a five inning mercy rule.

The Sagehen's pitching duo of Nyla Springer and Audrey Reimers combined to limit Manhattanville to seven hits. Despite allowing six runs, only four were earned, as the Sagehens' defense held strong. Springer picked up the win in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out three.

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Haverford College at home for a double header on Thursday, March 14th. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
