Sagehens Sweep Austin College In First Games Of The Season

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Austin College twice Saturday in Claremont. The first game was 16-0 (5 innings) and the second game was 8-0 (5 innings). 

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 2-0 overall.

Game one: Pomona-Pitzer 16, Austin College 0

The Sagehens wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over Austin College. The offense was sparked by a leadoff single up the middle from Devin Waddell then Kylie Liu drilled a two-RBI double to right center to give the Sagehens an early 2-0 advantage. The rally continued with a double from both Violet Burnham and Emily Hurtado to make the score 3-0 after the first inning. In the bottom of the second,  Claire Sefkow got things started with a single up the middle and Waddell followed with another base hit, putting two on with no outs. Bella Carreon was hit by a pitch for the second straight inning, loading the bases. Liu delivered once again, driving a two-RBI single to left field, scoring both Sefkow and Waddell to push the lead to 5-0. Burnham kept the pressure on, ripping an RBI double to left, bringing home Carreon. A sacrifice fly from Sophia Roberts then scored Liu, making it a 7-0 ballgame in only the second inning. The Sagehens did not let up there as they went on to score nine more runs in the bottom of the third to take a dominant 16-0 lead over Austin College. With two runners in scoring position, K. Liu grounded out to shortstop but still managed to drive in Waddell, making it 9-0. Burnham delivered the biggest swing of the inning, crushing a two-run homer to left field to extend the lead to 11-0. Marie Milton, pinch-hitting, came through with an RBI single to right, pushing the lead to 12-0. The Sagehens showed no signs of slowing down. Claire Sefkow notched her second hit of the inning with a single to left, setting the stage for Waddell, who capped off the offensive explosion with a grand slam to left, bringing home Sefkow, Milton, and Hurtado to make it a 16-0 game.

Devin Waddell pitched a lights out game, only giving up three hits and allowing no runs. Sagehens had six players with multi-hit games : Waddell (4/4), Liu (2/4), Burnham (3/4), Summer Gibson (2/3) , Hurtado (2/3), and Sefkow (2/3). 

Game two: Pomona-Pitzer 8, Austin College 0

The Sagehens defeated the Kangaroos of Austin College 8-0 in five innings with four Sagehens having multi-hit games: Emily Hurtado (2/3), Devin Waddell (2/4), Kylie Liu (3/4), and Jiselle Nguyen (2/3). Nyla Springer had herself a day in the circle striking out three batters, giving up only two hits, and giving up no runs. 

In their second game of the day, the Sagehens continued to put on a hitting clinic. In the first inning, Liu started things off for the Sagehens with a single to left field. The very next batter was Burnham who hit her second home run on the day, a shot over the left field fence, making the score 2-0 after the first inning. The Sagehens tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 3-0 over Austin College, while the Sagehens' pitching remained dominant. Austin College went down in order in the top of the second, as N. Springer stayed in control on the mound, recording two strikeouts and a groundout to shortstop to keep the Kangaroos off the board. In the bottom half, Morgan Groves sparked the offense with a one-out double to left field. Waddell came through in the clutch, ripping an RBI double to left to bring home Groves and extend the lead to 3-0. The Sagehens added another run in the bottom of the fourth while Springer continued to dominate on the mound. Jiselle Nguyen got things going with a bunt single, advancing Reimers who walked to second on an error by the third baseman. Waddell again came clutch with an RBI single, scoring Audrey Reimers and extending the Sagehens' lead to 4-0. The Sagehens wasted no time adding to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hurtado led off with a single to left and Milton followed with another base hit. Reimers then drew a walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Mia Lopez, who delivered in a big way with a clutch bases-clearing double up the middle, driving in three runs to make it 7-0. After a Nguyen single Gibson laid down a perfectly placed bunt single, allowing Groves to cross the plate and push the lead to 8-0.
