Sagehens Split SCIAC Opener Against Redlands

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split with Redlands Saturday in Claremont. The first game the Sagehens won 4-2 and the second game they lost 0-8. 

Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC conference play.

Game one:

In a tightly contested battle, the Sagehens secured a late-game rally to claim a 4-2 victory over the Redlands Bulldogs. Redlands struck first in the opening inning but the Sagehens responded in the bottom of the first, with Kylie Liu doubling to left center and Violet Burnham delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Redlands managed to reclaim the lead in the top of the third making it 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Sagehens found their breakthrough moment in the bottom of the fifth when Devin Waddell launched a solo home run over the center field fence, tying the game at 2-2 and shifting momentum back to the Sagehens. After holding Redlands scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Sagehens capitalized on their opportunities in the bottom half of the inning. Emily Hurtado got the rally started with a single, followed by a hit from Brooke Bullis. With the bases loaded, Waddell was hit by a pitch, forcing in the go-ahead run. Right after, Bella Carreon hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing another run to score and giving Pomona-Pitzer a 4-2 lead heading into the final inning.The Sagehens' defense remained solid in the top of the seventh, securing the 4-2 win.

Waddell went 1/3  with a home run, and two RBIs, Burnham went 3/4 with one RBI, Hurtado went 2/3, and Jiselle Nguyen went 2/3.

Game two: 

The Sagehens started game two with solid defensive plays, holding Redlands scoreless in the first two innings. Freshman pitcher Audrey Reimers was a force in the circle, making all three outs for the Sagehens in the first inning. However, Redlands broke through in the top of the third inning, plating four runs, including a three-run homer. The Sagehens struggled to respond offensively, managing only one hit in the bottom half of the inning with a single from Liu. Redlands extended their lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to add another run. The Sagehens attempted to regain momentum but were unable to string together hits against the Bulldogs' pitching. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring three more runs on a pair of doubles and an error. Despite a leadoff walk from Bella Carreon in the bottom half of the fifth, the Sagehens couldn't mount a comeback, ending the game on a double play.

In the 8-0 loss, Lui went 1/2 and Bullis went 1/1.
