No. 8 Sagehens Take Both Games In Opener Doubleheader Over No. 10 ETBU

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer baseball team opened their season with a doubleheader win over No. 10 East Texas Baptist by the scores of 5-3 and 16-5 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
 
A rematch of last year's NCAA Super Regional to start the year with a top-10 match up in Division III went the way of Pomona-Pitzer who won the series with a doubleheader win at home against the Tigers.

The Sagehens were led by JC Ng, Greg Perantoni, and Jack Gold who each went 2-3 in the win.  JC Ng blasted his first home run of the year while Peter Savas had two RBIs and Jimmy Legg earned an RBI as well in the win. Max Brunngraber got the ball for opening day and turned out a fantastic showing against the No. 10 team in the nation with 5.2 innings, three hits, two runs and two strikeouts for his first collegiate win. Jack Wiessinger came in for the save with 1.1 innings out of the pen.
 
The Sagehens got going early against the Tigers as Legg doubled home the first run of the game in the top of the second.  Ng started the third with the first home run of 2025 while Savas doubled home two more and another run off of a passed ball put the Sagehens up 5-0 after the third inning of play.
 
The Tigers got their offense going late in the game with two runs in the sixth and ended up getting one more in the seventh, but Wiessinger was able to come in and close out game one as the Sagehens started 2025 with a Top-10 win over ETBU.

 The Sagehens were led by Cooper Berry who had a monster game going 4-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Jack Gold and Kai Gonzaga also hit their first home runs of the year while Gonzaga went 2-4 and William Kinney also had a multi-hit game going 2-4 as well.
 
Freshman Will Polishuk earned his first win of his collegiate career with a fantastic 5 innings giving up just one hit and two runs with six strikeouts. Justin Zerger had three innings of relief work while Stephen Kwak closed out the game with the final inning.
 
ETBU scored first in the top of the second with a double steal and it was all Sagehens from that point on. Pomona-Pitzer scored three in the second and then four in the fourth and five in the sixth to go up 10 at 13-3. The Sagehens finished the game with 12 hits and 15 RBIs as they made a huge statement with an 11-run victory over the Tigers to win both games of the opener doubleheader.
