CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team came away with an 11-7 win on their home opener against Azusa Pacific on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 2-1 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Mia Amberger who netted four goals in the win.
Kaylee Stigar and
Brienz Lang had multi-goal games with two each while
Sydney Bianchi,
Lisbon Zeigler, and
Sydney Bowns had one.
A slow start by both teams in the first quarter ended with just one goal scored by the Sagehens off of a five-meter penalty from Lang to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars came back with a goal before the Sagehens hit on three-straight goals from Stigar and two from Amberger to take a 4-1 lead. APU answered back with a goal to break the streak by the Sagehens, but Amberger earned a first half hat-trick with the final goal of the half to put the Sagehens up 5-2 at halftime.
The Cougars owned the third period to get back into the game outscoring the Sagehens 5-2. APU made is a 5-5 game before alternating goals to end the third as Zeigler and Bianchi found the back with the Cougars and Sagehens even at 7-7 heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer found its grove and took over in the fourth. Stigar opened the fourth with a goal followed by Lang and Bowns to put the Sagehens up 10-7. Ambegrer ended the night with her fourth as the Sagehens ended their home opener with a win.
