Sagehens Defeat Whittier In First Game Of Series

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Whittier 12-7 in Whittier.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 6-2 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC conference play.

Devin Waddell, Jiselle Nguyen, and Violet Burnham lead the team with hits, all three going 3/4. Waddell had three RBIs while Nguyen and Burnham had two RBIs.

The Sagehens got on the board right away, scoring one run in the first. Waddell led things off with a double to right field and got home off of an RBI groundout from Kylie Lui. After the first inning, the Sagehens' bats became cold while the Poets started to heat up. The Poets took the lead back in the bottom of the third and continued to extend that lead in the fourth inning. The score after the fourth was 5-1.

The Sagehens put together a massive eight-run fifth inning to take control against Whittier. The scoring began with Liu grounding out to the pitcher, allowing J. Nguyen to score and cut the deficit to 5-2. Emily Hurtado then doubled to right center, bringing in Waddell to make it 5-3. Burnham followed with a clutch two-run homer, tying the game at 5-5. Summer Roberts kept the momentum going with a single to center, and after an error by Whittier's third baseman, Gibson reached and advanced, setting the stage for Nguyen, who delivered a two-RBI single to give Pomona-Pitzer a 7-5 lead. Waddell then added another RBI single, extending the lead to 9-5 before the inning finally came to an end

The Sagehens added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead. Summer Gibson started the inning with an infield single, and Nguyen followed with a base hit to left, advancing Gibson to third. Waddell then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Gibson to make it 10-7. With two outs, Bella Carreon crushed a two-run homer, scoring J. Nguyen and pushing the lead to 12-7. In the bottom half of the inning, Whittier attempted to rally but was unable to capitalize. Nyla Springer shut the door, striking out the final Poet to secure the win for the Sagehens.
