CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team advanced to the SCIAC Tournament semifinals with a 52-43 win over Redlands Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens will now take on No. 1 seed Whittier College on the road on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
Abigail Homan led Pomona-Pitzer with a team-high 19 points to go with six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Jadyn Lee had 13 points and 14 rebounds while
Emily Lee contributed 10 points, five boards and three steals. As a team, the Sagehens out-shot the Bulldogs from the floor, 38.5% to 29.5%, and from deep, 42.9% to 14.3%.
Teams traded baskets in a tough, defensive first quarter, as
Jadyn Lee drained a jumper and Homan scored a turnaround basket to give Pomona-Pitzer a 10-9 lead.
Jadyn Lee scored another jump shot and
Elsa Cottrell got a layup to fall as the Sagehens took a 21-17 lead midway through the second quarter.
Jadyn Lee drained a shot from three-point range just before the end of the half, with Pomona-Pitzer taking a 24-21 lead into the locker room.
Emily Lee hit a three of her own early in the third quarter before Redlands came fighting back, scoring five straight to take a 30-29 advantage. Homan hit a layup and a three, and
Emily Lee added a triple of her own to give the Sagehens a 37-31 lead heading into the final quarter.
Charlize Andaya hit a floater in the lane to start the fourth, but the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered to come within a point, 39-38. Redlands then used a 5-3 run to take a 43-42 advantage. But it was all Sagehens down the stretch, as Homan hit another trey and
Jadyn Lee added a jumper to give the team a 47-43 advantage with 2:26 left. Pomona-Pitzer's defense held strong in the closing minutes, as
Emily Lee,
Jadyn Lee and Andaya each hit free throws in the final minutes to seal the 52-43 Sagehen win.
