Sagehens Fall To LMU, CSUF At Barbara Kalbus Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell 14-8 to No. 14 Loyola Marymount University and 10-9 to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Complex during the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens drop to 2-5 overall.

The sagehens had an array of scorers with Bella McGowan netting two, while teammates, Lisbon Zeigler, Brienz Lang, Gabby Lewis, Harper Casey-Housand, Layla Szymczak, and Lulu Gaither grabbed a goal each. 

The first quarter was a tightly contested battle, with Gaither getting the first goal of the match for the Sagehens at the 5:32 mark. Szymczak then put the Sagehens up by one off of an assist from Lang. LMU was able to even out the score at 2-2 however Lang ended the first quarter with a goal to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead. 

LMU responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Sagehens 3-1 to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. The third quarter saw LMU extend their lead with five more goals, while the Sagehens managed to only find the back of the net once, making it 10-5 heading into the final period.

The Sagehens mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring three quality goals—two from McGowan and one from Casey-Housand. However, LMU responded with four goals of their own, securing a final score of 14-8.

Despite the loss, Pomona-Pitzer's goalie Zosia Amberger made a commendable 16 saves.

Sagehens 9, CSUF 10

Despite leading 8-3 in the third period, Pomona-Pitzer ultimately fell 10-9 to the Titans. Mia Amberger led the Sagehens with a pair of goals while Lulu Gaither posted a pair of assists and a goal. 

Kaylee Stigar scored the first goal of the game, before a Chloe Mei Espinosa score late in the first made it 2-1 Pomona-Pitzer. An Amberger goal midway through the second period capped a 3-0 Sagehen run to go up 5-2. Brienz Lang scored near the end of the half, as Pomona-Pitzer led 6-3 at the break. 

Gaither and Paityn Richardson traded goals early in the third to give the Sagehens their largest lead of the game, 8-3. But the Titans responded with six unanswered scores to take a 9-8 advantage. Amberger tied the game back up at 9-9 midway through the final period, but Fullerton's Mia Solorzano scored the winning goal with 2:41 left as the Titans came away with the narrow 10-9 win.
