Sagehens Sweep Brandeis at Home

CLAREMONT, CA— The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dominated in both games against Brandeis University winning the first game 7-4 and winning the second game 3-0.

Season Impact: The result puts the Sagehens at 5-2 on the season.

Game one:

Marie Milton led Pomona-Pitzer offensively going 2-2, a pair of doubles with three RBIs and scoring two runs. Another notable offensive performance came from Kylie Liu who went 2-4 with one RBI. Nyla Springer got the win in the circle for the Sagehens after pitching 6.2 innings, striking out three, and only giving up one hit.

The Sagehens were held scoreless until the top of the third inning when Devin Waddell grounded out but advanced the runners, allowing Milton who previously got on from a double down the left field line, to score. The Sagehens got more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs when Emily Hurtado got walked then right after Bella Carreon got hit by a pitch, setting the stage up for Milton who doubled to right field scoring both Hurtado and Carreon. With Milton on second base, Heather Hennigh was able to reach first on an error which scored Milton. After the fourth inning, the Sagehens were up 4-0. 

More runs came for the Sagehens in the bottom of the fifth inning when Waddell hit a lead off single to left field. Liu crushed a ball to center field to score Waddell making the score 5-0. Brandeis ended up walking Hurtado and Carreon making it a bases loaded situation for Milton who also drew a walk, scoring Liu. Brandeis ended up walking in another run and at the end of the fifth inning, the score was 7-0

Brandeis was able to string together a few hits which led to the four runs scored against the Sagehens but they came up short and the final score of game one was 7-4, Sagehens on top.

 
Game two:

Waddell led the Sagehens offensively in the second game going 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and two home runs. Hennigh went 2-3 and Milton went 1-2 with an RBI. Sophia Roberts came in to pinch hit and went 1-1 with two RBIs.

Waddell got things going right away for the Sagehens in the bottom of the first with a lead-off solo home run over the centerfield fence. Milton's bat stayed hot as she tacked on another hit with a shot over the shortstop but the Sagehens ended the first inning with a 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens added another run on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to another Waddell home run. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Waddell led things off with a single down the left field line. Carreon followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Waddell into scoring position. A single by Liu created a first and third situation for the Sagehens and Milton hit a sacrifice fly to score Waddell. The Sagehens added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Hurtado doubled down the left field line, Brooke Bullis singled to move Hurtado to third, and Roberts brought them both home with a single to center field. The final score of game two was 5-0. 
 

Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will resume conference play on the road and take on Whittier on Friday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. PT.
