Baseball Opens SCIAC Play With 13-2 Win at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team cruised to a SCIAC-opening 13-2 road victory over Chapman Friday afternoon at W.O. Hart Park.

Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' season record to 4-2, including 1-0 in SCIAC play.

Cooper Berry led Pomona-Pitzer offensively with four RBIs, going 2-3 from the plate and scoring a run. Jack Gold posted three RBIs after going 2-5 with a homerun and a double while Jimmy Legg and Jc Ng each added two RBIs. Max Brunngraber picked up his third win of the season from the mound, fanning six and allowing just three hits in 5.0 innings of work. Jack Wiessinger went 4.0 innings in relief while also posting six strikeouts and three hits with no runs.

The Sagehens wasted no time getting on the board, with Ng scoring from third on a Gold RBI in the first inning. Pomona-Pitzer then added three runs in the second, as Lateef Wakil first scored on a Ng RBI. Berry then drove in William Kinney from third on a sac fly to center field before Greg Pierantoni doubled to right field to score Ng from second.

The Panthers responded with a run in the second and fourth to make it 4-2 Sagehens. But that was as close as it would get, with Pomona-Pitzer adding a pair of runs in the fifth off RBIs from Peter Savas and Gold.

The Sagehens added seven runs in the final two innings to put the game away. Legg drove Wakil and Tanner DeGrazia home on a double to right center before Ng sent Kinney home on a groundout RBI. Berry then singled to left center, scoring Legg to make it 10-2 Pomona-Pitzer in the eighth inning. Gold homered in the ninth before Berry drove in Kinney and DeGrazia with a single to center field, as the Sagehens came away with the dominant 13-2 win.

Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will host Chapman tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22, in a doubleheader at Alumni Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. PT.
