REDLANDS, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer softball team's late comeback attempt fell just short, as the team lost 8-7 at Redlands Sunday afternoon.
Season Impact: The result puts the Sagehens at 3-2 on the season, including 1-2 in SCIAC play.
Devin Waddell and
Kylie Liu led Pomona-Pitzer offensively with two RBIs apiece, with Waddell going 2-4 from the plate.
Emily Hurtado went 3-4 as the Sagehens out-hit the Bulldogs 10-9 but left 10 on base.
The Sagehens got out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second, with Waddell singling to send
Bella Carreon and
Heather Hennigh home. Redlands then responded in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer, though, fought back to retake the lead in the fourth. Hurtado singled to left field, sending
Jiselle Nguyen to third before she advanced home on an error. Liu then recorded a single of her own, driving in Waddell and Hurtado as the Sagehens went up 5-3.
The Bulldogs again responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring four to take a 7-5 lead. Waddell scored in the top of the sixth off a Burnham RBI to bring the Sagehens within one, 7-6, but Redlands tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning to go back up two, 8-6. Carreon scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh with one out to then make it 8-7 Bulldogs. But Pomona-Pitzer couldn't quite come all the way back, as the Sagehens left two on base in the frame and ultimately fell 8-7.
Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will host Brandeis University in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 21, at Wig Beach Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled at 12:00 p.m. PT.
