CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball split its doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran Saturday at Alumni Field, taking game one 10-2 before falling 11-7 in game two.
Season Impact: The result puts the Sagehens at 3-2 overall on the season.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Pacific Lutheran 2
The Sagehens got out to a big lead early and never looked back in game one of the doubleheader, cruising to a 10-2 win over the Lutes.
Greg Pierantoni led Pomona-Pitzer with three hits in five at-bats, including a double and a triple, and two RBIs.
JC Ng and
Cooper Berry each homered and had three RBIs apiece.
Max Brunngraber earned the win on the mound, starting the game and going 6.0 innings with two strikeouts and just one run on six hits allowed.
Berry posted the first RBI of the game, driving Ng home with a sac fly to right field. Later in the inning, Pierantoni scored on a passed ball after having previously reached base with a single up the middle as the Sagehens led 2-0 after the first.
Pomona-Pitzer kept its foot on the gas offensively in the second, adding five runs to go up 7-0. Ng smashed a three-run homer to right-center field, also scoring
Jack Gold and
William Kinney. Berry added a homerun of his own in the inning to right field, also sending Pierantoni home who had reached base on a triple.
The Sagehens' defense held strong, leaving 10 runners stranded throughout the rest of the game. The Lutes added runs in the fifth and ninth innings, but Pomona-Pitzer came away with the commanding 10-2 win.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Pacific Lutheran 11
The Sagehens found themselves in an early 8-0 deficit after the first inning and couldn't quite fight their way back, despite out-scoring the Lutes 7-3 the rest of the way. Ng tallied a game-high three RBIs while Berry added two to lead the team offensively.
Pacific Lutheran managed to put up an eight-spot in the first inning, scoring four off of bases-loaded walks, one on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, and another three off RBI singles. The Lutes added two more in the third to take a 10-0 lead.
But Pomona-Pitzer refused to go down without a fight, as
Jimmy Legg tripled to right field and scored Kinney from first. Berry then posted his second homer of the day in the fourth, skying one to left-center to make it 10-2. Ng hit a sac fly in the fifth to score Kinney again before Berry notched a sac fly of his own to score Legg, making it 10-4.
Pacific Lutheran tacked on a run in the sixth before the Sagehens added two more in the bottom of the frame. Ng singled to right field with the bases loaded, driving in Legg and
Lateef Wakil to bring Pomona-Pitzer within five, 11-6. Legg scored one more run in the eighth but it wasn't enough, as the Sagehens fell 11-7 to the Lutes.
