ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball fell in a tight late battle to SCIAC opponent Chapman 67-65 on Saturday afternoon at the Hudson Athletic Complex.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Jadyn Lee who had 18 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss.
Abigail Homan was also in double digits with 10 while
Shea Joko came off the bench with nine.
The Sagehens had the advantage from the field hitting on 45.8% of their shots to Chapman's 39.1%, but the Panthers had a nice night from beyond the arc hitting on 10-22 for 45.5%. Pomona-Pitzer also turned the ball over 17 times that allowed for 17 Chapman points off of turnovers with the Sagehens holding the advantage in the paint 30-18.
Pomona-Pitzer took the lead early holding an 11-7 advantage after a Homan layup that got pushed to a 16-7 lead after an
Elsa Cottrell three with 2:29 left in the first. The Sagehens did a good job building an early lead and went into the second quarter up 10 at 19-9.
The Sagehens held their lead early in the quarter, but Chapman came back with a 14-6 run that cut the lead down to just two points at 25-23 midway through the second quarter. Chapman continued to keep it close and eventually took the lead just before halftime with a pair of free-throws to hold a 30-29 advantage over the Sagehens at the break.
The Panthers stayed hot coming out of halftime and built a 37-31 lead with a quick 7-2 run. The Sagehens immediately responded with an 8-0 run to take a 39-37 lead and then closed out the quarter with a 13-7 run to hold an eight-point lead at 52-44 heading into the fourth.
The Panthers cut into the lead early and opened the fourth with an 11-4 run to make it a one-point game at 56-55 with five minutes to play in the fourth. Chapman took a 66-65 lead with 46 seconds left and went to the free-throw line to try to close the game out. The Panthers ended up missing five of their last six free throws but crashed the boards and earned extra opportunities but still only lead 67-65 with a chance for the Sagehens to get a last second shot.
Emily Lee had a good look at a three, but it rimmed out as the Panthers held off the Sagehens for the win.
