Matthew Diekmann all scored in double figures to lead Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball to a 79-63 win over Chapman Saturday evening on the road.
Season Impact: The result improves the Sagehens' record to 11-8 on the season, including 5-5 in SCIAC play.
Cookson reached a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding five rebounds and two assists. Bergman had 18 points and six rebounds while Boyle contributed 17 points and a team-high seven boards. Diekmann pitched in 10 points for Pomona-Pitzer.
As a team, the Sagehens shot 50% from the floor, including 44.4% from three, while holding the Panthers to 39.3% shooting. Pomona-Pitzer dominated down low, scoring 40 points in the paint to Chapman's 26. The Sagehens led by as many as 21 points and held the lead for over 25 minutes of the game.
Chapman got out to an early 8-3 lead before Pomona-Pitzer fought its way back, taking a 14-11 advantage after a
Peyton Mullarkey triple. Teams then traded baskets, as layups from
Sam Lind and Boyle put the Sagehens up 21-19. Cookson got a lay-in to fall and
Owen Avdalovic nailed a three-pointer as the game remained tied, 31-31, at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer managed to create some separation early in the second half, with a Boyle trey and a Cookson layup putting the team up 40-33. Cookson then nailed a turnaround jumper and Mullarkey found Bergman for a layup to make it 44-35 Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer kept its foot on the gas, with Bergman hitting a jumper and scoring a layup then Cookson adding a jumper to make it 56-42.
Diekmann later scored a layup and a three-pointer to give the Sagehens a 63-46 lead with 8:29 left. Boyle hit a pair of three-pointers before Bergman and Diekmann traded layups to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead of the game, 75-54. Bergman and Lind scored layups down the stretch as the Sagehens came away with the 79-63 win.
