PASADENA, Calif. —
Joe Cookson posted 24 points and six assists while
Ty Bergman had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball to an 84-68 win over Caltech on the road Monday night.
Season Impact: The win propels the Sagehens to 12-8 on the season, including 6-5 in SCIAC play.
Cookson reached a game-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding four rebounds and a block to go with his six assists. Bergman shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor, tallying seven boards, four blocks, three steals and two assists.
Pete Boyle and
Matthew Diekmann scored seven points apiece for Pomona-Pitzer while
Peyton Mullarkey contributed six points and four assists.
Both teams traded points early, with layups from Cookson, Bergman and Diekmann tying the game at 16. Caltech used an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead before a Bergman dunk later made it 26-22 for the Beavers. Cookson gave the Sagehens a 27-26 advantage with a triple, then hit another to make it 30-27.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead, 39-31, after a pair of Bergman layups. Cookson hit a jumper just before the half as the Sagehens took a 43-33 lead into the locker room.
Bergman and Pomona-Pitzer kept their foot on the gas to start the second half, with Bergman getting another layup to fall to make it 47-33. Bergman hammered home another dunk before a Diekmann layup gave the Sagehens a 53-38 advantage with 13:44 to go. Mullarkey and Cookson traded three-pointers to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead of the night, 59-38, and force a Beaver timeout.
Caltech answered with a 7-0 run but the Sagehens continued to keep the Beavers at bay, with Boyle knocking down a jumper and Mullarkey hitting a three. Bergman had another dunk, Diekmann hit a trey and Boyle got a layup to fall to make it 71-54 Pomona-Pitzer with 6:15 left. Bergman,
