CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball fell 73-71 to Hamline University Tuesday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at 6-5 on the season, including 1-1 in SCIAC play.
Sara Chicco led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-9 from three.
Abigail Homan added 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while
Avery Patricco had 13 points and a pair of assists.
Jadyn Lee contributed 10 points and six boards.
Teams traded baskets in a high scoring first quarter, with Patricco knocking down a three to give the Sagehens an 18-14 lead. The Pipers, though, scored 10 of the quarter's final 14 points to go up 24-22.
In the second, Hamline pulled away to a 12-point lead before a Homan layup stopped the momentum.
Sofia Robel hit a jumper and Patricco hit another three to then bring Pomona-Pitzer within seven, 38-31. J. Lee scored a layup off a
Molly Pieper assist and Patricco added a free throw as the Sagehens trailed by just five, 41-36, at the half.
Chicco knocked down a triple midway through the third to bring Pomona-Pitzer within a point, 48-47. She added another with 2:52 to go in the third to tie the game at 52, before J. Lee hit one of her own. Homan added a trey to give the Sagehens a 59-57 lead heading into the fourth.
Teams traded baskets throughout the final quarter, with a Patricco floater making it 65-64 Sagehens with 4:55 to go. The Pipers, though, hit a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions to take a 71-66 lead with 1:03 left. Homan completed a three-point play to bring the Sagehens back within two, 71-69, with 32 seconds remaining. But Hamline hit two free throws in the final seconds and eventually held on for the 73-71 win.
Up Next: The Sagehens will resume SCIAC play on Saturday, Jan. 3, at home versus Redlands. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. PT.
