Sagehens Fall To Oberlin In The David Wells Classic

Season Impact: The Sagehens drop to 3-3 overall on the season.

Avery Patricco led the Sagehens with 11 points with four assists. Sara Chicco followed with eight points with six rebounds and a block and steal. Sofia Robel added eight points, went 4 for 5 from the field and grabbed eight boards.

The Sagehens opened the game at a slow offensive pace but stayed composed defensively as Oberlin took an early lead. Patricco put the Sagehens on the board at the 8:58 mark, knocking down a pair of free throws for a 2–0 advantage, but Oberlin responded with back-to-back threes to swing momentum. Abigail Homan controlled the glass with multiple defensive rebounds and two blocks in traffic, ending the game with eight boards and two blocks. At 6:37, the Sagehens broke through from the perimeter as Patricco drilled a three off a kickout from Shea Joko to pull the Sagehens within 6–5. Chicco provided a much-needed spark burying a three from the left side off an E. Lee assist to bring the Sagehens back within 16–8. Sofia Robel then delivered energy off the bench, grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring twice inside trimming the deficit to 19–12 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw baskets scored by four different Sagehens but Oberlin maintained their lead 29-23 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens surged through the third quarter behind pivotal three-pointers from Chicco, Patricco, Homan, and Katie Drais. An and-one play from Patricco marked the team's biggest momentum swing. Despite these key bursts, Oberlin answered late, and the Sagehens ended the quarter tied 46–46. The Sagehens briefly reclaimed the lead early in the fourth after E. Lee's three, but Pomona-Pitzer then went cold as Oberlin capitalized on turnovers and built a decisive run. Multiple missed threes and blocked attempts stalled Pomona-Pitzer's offense while Oberlin extended the gap into double digits. Late layups by Kayla Malek provided the only scoring relief, but the Sagehens couldn't counter Oberlin's momentum. Oberlin came out on top with the final score of 63-53.

Up Next: The Sagehens open SCIAC play on the road vs. Caltech on December 3rd at 7:00 PM.
