Sagehens Open David Wells Classic with Loss to Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball fell 78-72 to Puget Sound at CMS in its opening game of the 2025 David Wells Classic.

Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at 4-2 on the season.

Charlie Hutchison led the team with a career-high 26 points to go with 12 rebounds and three assists. Charlie Treene added 10 points and six boards while Matthew Diekmann pitched in nine points and three boards.

The Sagehens used a 7-0 run capped by a Connor Fitzgerald jumper to take a 17-13 lead midway through the first half. Despite a late triple and midrange jumper from Treene, Puget Sound fought back to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.

The Loggers got out to a 47-38 lead five minutes into the second half before Clyde Rosenberg scored in the paint. Puget Sound, though, pushed its lead to 15, 57-42, with 11:07 remaining before Hutchison scored in the paint.

Pomona-Pitzer refused to go down without a fight, as Hutchison scored another layup and a three to bring the team within nine, 63-54. Kyle Jasper then completed a three-point play, before Reagan Cornish hit a three and Hutchison scored down low to bring the Sagehens within four, 67-63, with 4:34 to go.

But that was as close as the Sagehens would get to taking the lead. Hutchison knocked down another three with 31 seconds to go, making it 74-68 Loggers. But Puget Sound eventually came away with the 78-72 victory.

Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will take on Linfield tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 29, at home at 5:00 p.m. PT.
