Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener at Pacific Lutheran

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team fell 72-58 in its season opener at Pacific Lutheran Friday night.

Three Sagehens reached double figures in scoring, including a team-high 13 points from Matthew Diekmann. Charlie Hutchison and Reagan Cornish each added 10 while Sam Lind had nine points and five boards.

Pomona-Pitzer built a 17-11 lead midway through the first half, fueled by a Cornish three and a pair of Hutchison free throws. Diekmann later scored in the paint, but the Lutes ended the half on a 7-0 run to take a 40-25 advantage.

Diekmann completed a three-point play early in the second half to bring the Sagehens within 10, 43-33. Another Cornish triple and a pair of Hutchison free throws then brought Pomona-Pitzer within seven, 48-41. But Pacific Lutheran responded and led by as many as 23 with 4:18 to go.

Cooper Bladow hit a three and a jumper late, before Kyle Jasper added a trey of his own. But the Lutes eventually came away with the 72-58 win.

Up Next: The Sagehens return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 15, when they take on Puget Sound on the road at 6:00 p.m. PT.
