CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo defeated Cal Lutheran 16-13 Wednesday evening at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved their season record to 9-9 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Zach Whitfield and Jaden Winters who each netted four goals in the win. Winters added four assists for a team-high eight points. Max Distaso also had a multi-goal game, scoring three and dishing out four assists, while Jake Lee, Indigo Lee, Darragh Flanders, Ryan Kreutzkamp, Emerson LaPorta, Nick Grandinetti and Alden Pfau each netted one.
Pomona-Pitzer started strong against Cal Lutheran with 10 first half goals, scoring four in the first and six in the second quarter. The Kingsmen struck first, but Distaso responded with back-to-back goals with 4:27 and 3:35 left on the clock. Lee and Winters followed suit, as each netted another goal, bringing the Sagehens in the lead 4-3 as the first quarter concluded. Both teams went back and forth netting goals throughout the quarter. Pfau started the scoring in the second quarter by securing a goal with 7:36 left on the clock. The Sagehens continued to break through the opposing defense with Lee, Whitfield, and Flanders netting goals throughout the second period. Notably, Whitfield netted three goals with 4:05, 1:38, and 1:06 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime ahead of Cal Lutheran 10-5.
Pomona-Pitzer continued strong through the second half and secured six goals in the third and fourth quarters. Cal Lutheran struck first in the second half, but Whitfield followed by netting a goal with 4:31 left on the clock. The Kingsmen persisted to break through the Sagehen defense, but Pomona-Pitzer maintained their lead with a penalty goal from Winters with 1:01 left on the clock. The third quarter finished with the Sagehens still leading 12-9.
The Sagehens powered through the fourth quarter with four more goals. Winters started the scoring in the final quarter by netting a goal with 6:10 left on the clock. Kreutzkamp, Winters and Distaso then each netted a goal to further the Pomona-Pitzer heading. Pomona-Pitzer concluded the game by defeating Cal Lutheran 16-13.
