Sagehens Defeat Chapman in Saturday Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team defeated Chapman 11-9 before falling to Cuesta College in an exhibition 17-12 Saturday at Haldeman Pool.

Season Impact: The win over the Panthers puts the Sagehens at 10-9 on the season, including 5-0 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 11, Chapman 9

Jaden Winters led the Sagehens versus the Panthers with a hat trick. Darragh Flanders and Ryan Kreutzkamp each also had a multigoal game and scored two goals each with Jake Lee, Zach Whitfield, Miles Chiang, and Logan Colman each netting one goal.

Pomona-Pitzer started off strong against Chapman with four first half goals including four goals in the first and two in the second quarter. Winters started the scoring in the first quarter by securing a penalty goal with 6:08 left on the clock. Winters continued by netting another goal by breaking through the Panthers defenses with 3:51 left on the clock. Flanders then netted a goal with 2:16 left on the clock, followed by Chiang who netted a buzzer-beating goal with 0:01 left on the clock. The period finished with the Sagehens in the lead 4-0. In the second quarter, Chapman broke through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses and tried to catch up. However, Flanders and Lee managed each net goals with 2:45 and 2:05 left on the clock, respectively, to maintain the Sagehen lead. Pomona-Pitzer continued their lead and entered halftime ahead of Chapman 6-2.

The Sagehens continued to play well into the second half as they secured five more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Kreutzkamp started the scoring in the second half by netting a penalty shot with 5:15 left on the clock. While the Panthers broke through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses, Colman and Whitfield each netted a goal with 1:57 and 0:06 left on the clock, respectively. The third quarter finished with the Sagehens still in the lead 9-5.

Pomona-Pitzer continued their effort in the fourth quarter by scoring two more goals from Winters and Kreutzkamp that bolstered their lead. The Sagehens brought a competitive effort throughout the game and secured their 11-9 victory over Chapman.

Pomona-Pitzer 12, Cuesta 17

The Sagehens were led against the Cougars by Nick Grandinetti, who netted a hat trick with three goals throughout the game. Logan Colman also had a multi-goal game with two goals, and John Shafer, Jake Lee, Indigo Lee, Dillon Joyce, Darragh Flanders, Zach Whitfield and Tommy Ryan each netted one goal.

Pomona-Pitzer started well with four first half goals. Cuesta struck first, but Whitfield attempted to catch the Sagehens up by netting a goal with 6:27 left on the clock. Lee, Ryan, and Colman followed suit, and each netted a goal with 4:57, 4:16, and 1:32 left on the clock, respectively. Pomona-Pitzer found their lead and finished the first period ahead of Cuesta 4-2.

In the second quarter, the Cougars persisted in breaching the Pomona-Pitzer defenses. While the Sagehens had various opportunities to score, they failed to hit their mark and lost their lead. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime behind Cuesta 4-8.

The Sagehens powered through the second half and managed to secure eight goals in the third and fourth quarters. Grandinetti started the scoring in the second half by netting a goal with Colman and Flanders following his lead. Shafer then managed to net a penalty goal with 3:16 left on the clock to bring Pomona-Pitzer trailing 8-10. However, Cuesta continued to break through the Sagehen defenses, and Pomona-Pitzer finished the third quarter behind 8-13. In the fourth period, Lee secured another goal for the Sagehens during a powerplay with 7:30 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer played well through the end of the game with two more goals from Grandinetti and one from Joyce, but the Cougars further breached their defenses and took the lead. Pomona-Pitzer fell to Cuesta in the 12-17 exhibition defeat.
