CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell to Chapman in a five-set thriller (25-14, 31-29,17-25, 21-25, 14-16) Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at 7-8 on the season, including 2-3 in SCIAC play.
Paige Mountanos, who tallied her 1,000th career kill in the match, led the Sagehens with 20 kills, 11 digs and a pair of service aces.
Samantha Grabb followed with 11 kills on a .391 clip, while
Tene Ariyo and
Anna Krebs each added 10 kills.
Charlotte Sekerka posted nine kills with a .400 hitting percentage.
Pomona-Pitzer cruised to a 25-14 set one win, closing the frame with six straight points. Krebs,
Sophie Mies, Mountanos, Sekerka and Grabb each posted kills in the 6-0 run while
Corrina Benson had a service ace. The Sagehens then went on to win a marathon second set, 31-29, to take a 2-0 match lead. With the game tied at 29-29, Ariyo posted a kill and the Panthers registered an attack error to give Pomona-Pitzer the second set.
Chapman came out strong in the third, taking a 23-12 lead before the Sagehens rattled off six straight points. Grabb tallied three straight kills in the 6-0 run, but the Panthers took the third, 25-17. Teams then traded points in the fourth set, with a Krebs kill tying the game at 21-21. But Chapman scored the game's final four points, tying the match at 2-2.
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the deciding fifth set, but a 4-1 Sagehen run capped by a Mountanos kill brought Pomona-Pitzer within two, 11-9. Later trailing 14-11, Mountanos sparked a 3-0 Sagehen run to tie the game at 14-14. But the Panthers scored the next two, taking the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
