CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team finished the Gary Troyer Tournament with a loss and a win Saturday, falling to Concordia Irvine 14-12 before defeating Biola 15-10 at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the results, the Sagehens continue their season at 8-9 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 12, Concordia 14
The Sagehens were led by Indigo Lee versus the Golden Eagles who netted an impressive four goals in the game. Jaden Winters netted a hat trick with three goals and Max Distaso also had a multi-goal game with two goals. Jake Lee, Darragh Flanders, and Zach Whitfield each also scored one goal.
Pomona-Pitzer started off well against Concordia with five first half goals including two goals in the first and three in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles struck first but Whitfield responded by finding the back of the net during a power play with 5:58 left on the clock. Concordia persisted in breaking through the Sagehen defense and found their lead early. A goal from Lee helped while Pomona-Pitzer attempted to catch up. The quarter finished with the Sagehens behind the Golden Eagles 2-5. Distaso started the scoring in the second quarter by netting a goal with 7:17 left on the clock. Winters and Lee each managed to break through the Eagles defenses and secure a goal with a man-up advantage. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime trailing Concordia 5-9.
The Sagehens remained strong in the second half of this heated game as they secured seven more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Distaso started the scoring in the third quarter by netting a goal during a powerplay with 6:36 left on the clock. Both teams went back and forth and each managed to score on each other. Notably, Winters and Lee managed to score two goals each throughout the quarter and the Pomona-Pitzer concluded the third quarter tied with Concordia 10-10.
Despite the strong effort from the Sagehens earlier in the half, the Golden Eagles managed to break through the Pomona-Pitzer defense and find the lead. Still, the Sagehens secured some last-minute goals in the hopes of shortening the gap. Lee and Flanders netted goals with 0:49 and 0:10 left on the clock, respectively, and set Pomona-Pitzer just behind 12-13. While the Sagehens put up a good game, a buzzer-beater goal from Concordia left Pomona-Pitzer to conclude the game with a loss, 14-12.
Pomona-Pitzer 15, Biola 10
The Sagehens were led by Max Distaso against Biola who netted four goals throughout the game. Chase Barman secured three goals and Zack Whitfield and Jaden Winters each also had a multi-goal game and netted two goals. Darragh Flanders, Ryan Kreutzkamp, Conrad Hugar, Alden Pfau, and Tommy Ryan each also netted a goal.
Pomona-Pitzer found their lead early with eight first half goals including four from the first and four from the second quarter. Pfau started the scoring in the first quarter by netting a goal with 7:46 left on the clock. Whitfield, Winters, and Distaso followed, and each scored a goal to bring the Sagehens to a sizeable lead. Pomona-Pitzer's defense also started strong and did not allow Biola to break through. The Sagehens finished the first period ahead 4-0.
Whitfield started the scoring in the second quarter by beating the goalie and netting a goal with 3:36 left on the clock. Distaso scored two and Ryan also secured a goal and furthered the lead. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime ahead of Biola with the score 7-1.
The Sagehens continued to bring the heat through the second half and managed to secure seven goals in the third and fourth quarters. Biola started breaking through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses, but Barman and Distaso each managed to net two goals to maintain the lead. Kreutzkamp and Flanders then advanced the lead by each scoring with 3:28 and 2:26 left on the clock, respectively. The Sagehens finished the third quarter ahead 13-5. Biola continued to break through the Pomona Pitzer defenses and attempted to catch up in the fourth quarter. However, Barman and Winters each netted a goal with 4:20 and 1:56 left on the clock to preserve the Sagehen lead 15-8. Pomona-Pitzer secured their lead and played well through the end of the game.
