CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team achieved a 10-9 overtime win against CMS Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season strong at 14-12 overall and 8-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Darragh Flanders, who netted a four-goal haul throughout the game. Zach Whitfield also secured a three-goal hattrick, and Jake Lee, Alden Pfau, and Jaden Winters each netted one.
Pomona-Pitzer started off strong against CMS with 6 first half goals, scoring two in the first and four in the second quarter. The Stags struck first, but Whitfield swiftly responded by netting a goal with 4:45 left on the clock. Flanders followed suit and scored a goal during a powerplay with 2:04 left on the clock. The Sagehens finished the first quarter ahead 2-1. Pfau and Lee each netted goals with 7:21 and 3:13 left on the clock in the second quarter, respectively, to tie the score 4-4. Flanders aided in maintaining the Sagehen lead by scoring two more goals, one during a powerplay with 2:30 and the other during even strength with 0:52 left on the clock. Thanks to a strong effort on all fronts, Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime with the lead 6-5.
The Stags started the scoring in the second half. Still, Flanders and Whitfield continued the momentum by each netting a goal with 1:31 and 1:02 left on the clock, respectively. The Sagehens maintained their lead and finished the third quarter, still leading 8-7. The Stags tied the score in the fourth quarter as the game eventually went into overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer maintained their passionate energy and managed to earn two more goals in the overtime periods. Winters started the scoring in overtime by netting a goal with 2:33 left on the clock in the fifth period. In the sixth period, Whitfield scored a goal with 2:08 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens ahead 10-8. Pomona-Pitzer finished the rivalry match with a 10-9 victory over CMS.
