Mountanos Becomes Program Kills Leader in Loss to La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball team fell in four sets (14-25, 19-25, 25-21, 14-25) to No. 1 La Verne Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: The result drops the Sagehens to 9-12 on the season, including 4-7 in SCIAC play.

Paige Mountanos secured 14 kills on the night, cementing herself as the all-time program career record holder in total kills in the rally scoring era with 1,082. She also had two digs and an assist.

Tene Ariyo and Anna Krebs each posted nine kills for the Sagehens while Samantha Grabb added eight and Charlotte Sekerka had seven. Corrina Benson racked up a team-high 16 digs and Savanna Cespedes dished out a team-best 23 assists.

La Verne earned a 25-14 set one win to take a 1-0 match lead, despite a pair of blocks from Grabb and Sekerka late. Mountanos earned seven of her 14 kills in the second set, including one to cut the Leopard's lead late, 23-19. But La Verne took set two, 25-19, to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Sagehens came out strong in the third, with a Krebs kill capping a 3-0 run to make it 20-15 Pomona-Pitzer. Mountanos and Grabb traded kills late before a La Verne attack error gave the Sagehens set three, 25-21. But the Leopards went on to win set four, 25-14, to earn the 3-1 match victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 25, at Redlands at 4:00 p.m. PT.
