PASADENA, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball won a five set thriller (25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 24-26, 16-14) Tuesday night at Caltech.
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 9-11 overall, including 4-6 in SCIAC play.
Paige Mountanos paced Pomona-Pitzer on offense with 14 kills on a .290 hitting percentage, adding 11 digs, a pair of blocks and a service ace.
Nayla Ward added nine kills while
CC Porter posted a career-high nine blocks with six kills on a .400 clip.
Corrina Benson notched 27 digs for the Sagehens while
Savanna Cespedes had 20 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer cruised to a 25-14 set one win, with
Samantha Grabb,
Alex Besteman and Mountanos trading kills near the end of the frame. Mountanos sealed the win with an ace. The Sagehens then cruised to another win in set two, 25-19, as kills from
Tene Ariyo and
Nicole Rabadi put the team up 2-0 in the match.
But the Beavers responded, winning each of the next two sets to tie the match at 2-2. Caltech rallied after facing match point, 24-23, in the fourth, scoring the final three points to force a deciding fifth set.
Teams traded points in the fifth, as a
Charlotte Sekerka kill followed by a block from Porter and Mountanos tied the game at 13-13. Caltech then scored the next point to send it to match point. But the Sagehens finished strong, with Grabb, Ward and Mountanos each securing kills to seal the 16-14 set five win and the 3-2 match victory.
