Sagehens Prevail at Whittier, 17-16

WHITTIER, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team secured a 17-16 victory over Whittier Friday evening on the road.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve their season to 11-9 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Indigo Lee, Chase Barman, Darragh Flanders, Conrad Hugar, Zach Whitfield, Miles Chiang and Jaden Winters who each netted two goals in the win. Jake Lee, Ryan Kreutzkamp and Logan Colman each netted one.

Pomona-Pitzer started off strong against Whittier with 10 first half goals, scoring six in the first and four in the second quarter. The Sagehens struck first with Winters winning the sprint and netting a goal with 7:37 left on the clock. While the Poets briefly broke through the Pomona-Pitzer defense, the Sagehens continued to net goals throughout the first period with Hugar, Barman, and Flanders each netting one and Whitfield scoring two goals. Pomona-Pitzer concluded the first quarter ahead of Whittier 6-1. Lee started the scoring in the second quarter by securing a goal with 6:29 left on the clock. Both teams went back and forth with scoring and Lee, Barman, and Colman each netting a goal throughout the period. The Sagehens concluded the first half ahead 10-5.

Hugar started the scoring in the second half by netting a goal during a powerplay with 7:24 left on the clock. Lee, Flanders, and Chiang soon followed, and each scored a goal with 5:41, 4:58, and 3:52 left on the clock, respectively. However, the Poets continued to break through the Sagehen defenses to catch up. The third quarter finished with Pomona-Pitzer still leading 14-11.

Whittier further pushed past the Pomona-Pitzer defense and eventually tied the score 14-14 but a goal from Kreutzkamp with 4:44 left on the clock helped the Sagehens find their lead again at 15-14. Despite Whittier scoring two straight goals to take a late lead, Pomona-Pitzer regained the advantage with Winters and Chiang each netting a goal with 0:57 and 0:12 left on the clock, respectively. The Sagehens concluded the game with a 17-16 victory over Whittier.
