CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team suffered their first SCIAC loss of the season with a 17-10 loss to Chapman on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by a split quarterback play of
Luke Levitt and
Nick Kim. Levitt was 10-18 for 136 yards while Kim went 24-36 for 119 yards.
Leading the receivers was
Brennan Dragomer who had 9 catches for 93 yards with an 85-yard touchdown reception.
Jackson Walker had 71 yards off of 5 catches while
Sam Grimes racked up 31 yards off 5 catches.
The defense played well against the Panthers with
Gus Burns leading the tacklers with 12 and
Elliott Graziano with 10. Burns and Whiting picked up sacks in the game while
Jonathan Curry came away with an interception.
Chapman started the night with a 9 play drive that resulted in a 33-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead early, but then the Sagehens responded in their first play from scrimmage with an 85-yard touchdown to Dragomer to take an early 7-3 lead.
The Panthers responded with another long drive that went for 12 plays and 85 yard resulting in a touchdown to take over the lead at 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Both offenses struggled to put together scoring drives in the second quarter, but the Panthers did break a huge run for 54 yards to add their second touchdown of the fight half and went into the half with a 17-7 lead.
After switching the quarterback coming out of halftime, the Sagehens switched to an air raid attack to try to get the offense moving. The Sagehens had a few promising drives in the second half and cut the deficit down to a one-possession game after a
Jackson Walker 40-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer had the ball with a chance to tie or potentially take the lead in the fourth quarter, but had their drives result in an interception, fumble and then turning the ball over on downs as they suffered their first loss of the SCIAC season.
