Sagehens Hold on For 64-58 Win Over CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 64-58 Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium behind a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds from Jadyn Lee

Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 10-7 on the season, including 5-3 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer led by as many as 11 points late in the fourth quarter and held off a last-minute surge from the Athenas to secure the win. As a team, the Sagehens shot 38.1% from the floor to CMS's 38.7% clip but held the Athenas to 15.8% shooting from deep, while tallying a 33.3% clip of their own from distance. Pomona-Pitzer also posted 31 bench points to CMS's 19.

Teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with an Abigail Homan layup and an Emily Lee driving lay-in tying the game at 11. Homan later got a hook shot to fall but the Athenas held a 17-14 advantage through one quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer opened the second period with a flurry of baskets, including a pair from Sara Chicco and driving layups from Jadyn Lee, Elsa Cottrell and Andaya. The Sagehens continued to attack the basket, as driving lay-ins from Jadyn and Emily Lee and Charlotte Patel gave the team a 31-24 advantage. Andaya got another layup to fall just before the half as the Sagehens took a 33-30 lead into the locker room.

CMS came back to tie things up at 38 midway through the third, but a pair of Emily Lee triples put Pomona-Pitzer back up 44-38. Chicco and Jadyn Lee added jumpers to give the Sagehens a  48-43 lead heading into the fourth.

Neither team scored throughout the first three minutes of the final period until Emily Lee hit a triple off a Jadyn Lee assist. Chicco later got a layup to fall with 5:52 left to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead of the game, 56-45. CMS, though, later used a 10-0 run to tie the game at 58 with 1:03 to go. But Emily Lee put the game on ice with a driving layup with 36 seconds left. A series of defensive stops eventually led to Jadyn Lee getting fouled and knocking down a pair of free throws to all but seal the deal with eight seconds left. She knocked down another pair from the line as the Sagehens came away with the 64-58 win.
