CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 64-58 Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium behind a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds from
Jadyn Lee.
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 10-7 on the season, including 5-3 in SCIAC play.
Jadyn Lee reached 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting, adding a team-high eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
Emily Lee added 16 points and five boards for the Sagehens, while
Charlize Andaya had eight points, four steals and three assists.
Pomona-Pitzer led by as many as 11 points late in the fourth quarter and held off a last-minute surge from the Athenas to secure the win. As a team, the Sagehens shot 38.1% from the floor to CMS's 38.7% clip but held the Athenas to 15.8% shooting from deep, while tallying a 33.3% clip of their own from distance. Pomona-Pitzer also posted 31 bench points to CMS's 19.
Teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with an
Abigail Homan layup and an
Emily Lee driving lay-in tying the game at 11. Homan later got a hook shot to fall but the Athenas held a 17-14 advantage through one quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the second period with a flurry of baskets, including a pair from
Sara Chicco and driving layups from
Jadyn Lee,
Elsa Cottrell and Andaya. The Sagehens continued to attack the basket, as driving lay-ins from Jadyn and
Emily Lee and
Charlotte Patel gave the team a 31-24 advantage. Andaya got another layup to fall just before the half as the Sagehens took a 33-30 lead into the locker room.
CMS came back to tie things up at 38 midway through the third, but a pair of
Emily Lee triples put Pomona-Pitzer back up 44-38. Chicco and
Jadyn Lee added jumpers to give the Sagehens a 48-43 lead heading into the fourth.
Neither team scored throughout the first three minutes of the final period until
Emily Lee hit a triple off a
Jadyn Lee assist. Chicco later got a layup to fall with 5:52 left to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead of the game, 56-45. CMS, though, later used a 10-0 run to tie the game at 58 with 1:03 to go. But
Emily Lee put the game on ice with a driving layup with 36 seconds left. A series of defensive stops eventually led to
Jadyn Lee getting fouled and knocking down a pair of free throws to all but seal the deal with eight seconds left. She knocked down another pair from the line as the Sagehens came away with the 64-58 win.
