CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent La Verne 69-67 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Sara Chicco who had a team-high 20 points in the loss.
Jadyn Lee had 12 points and seven rebounds while
Charlotte Patel chipped in with eight.
The Sagehens handled the Leopards early on in the game and put up 24 points in the first quarter alone. Pomona-Pitzer got going with a 12-5 lead out of the gate and stretched it over 10 just past the midway point of the first quarter to take it 16-5. La Verne added a few more points later in the quarter but the Sagehens came away with a 24-9 lead heading into the second.
The offense cooled off a bit for Pomona-Pitzer in the second quarter but still managed to grow its lead before halftime. La Verne added two free throws to close out the first half, but the Sagehens still led 35-19 heading into the break.
The Sagehens came out of halftime and delivered another good quarter of basketball outscoring La Verne 18-15 in the third to take their largest lead of the night at 19 points with a 53-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
La Verne's offense came to life in the fourth led by an exceptional shooting quarter from three hitting on 5-7 from beyond the arc. The Leopards came all the way back from down 19 points to a one-possession game at 59-57 with just under two minutes to play. The Sagehens held a slight lead late in the game up 62-60 with five seconds left, but the Leopards hit on their last shot of regulation and went into overtime tied at 62-62.
The Leopards had the better of the Sagehens in overtime and hit a last second shot to take a 69-67 lead. The Sagehens had a last second chance but could not find a winner as the Sagehens fell to La Verne at home.
