WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season with a 68-63 loss to Whittier on Wednesday night at Dave Jacobs Court.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Sarah Chicco who went for a team-high 24 points in the loss.
Abigail Homan had 12 points while
Jadyn Lee tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed with the Poets early in the first trailing by one point at 8-7 midway through the first. Whittier went on to end the first quarter with a 12-5 run and took a 20-12 lead heading into the second.
The Poets led by as much as 10 points in the first half with the Sagehens getting the lead down to six points at 34-28 with just 41 seconds remaining. Whittier ended the second quarter strong again and added the final two points of the half to take a 36-28 lead into halftime.
The Sagehens came out of halftime and immediately erased the Poets' lead after a layup by Homan and went up as much as four at 51-47 after a three-pointer by
Emily Lee with 2:19 to play in the third. The Poets were able to get back the lead just before the end of the third and held a 55-51 lead heading into the fourth.
Whittier struck early in the fourth and took a 63-54 lead with 6:04 to play that forced the Sagehens to chip away at the lead late in the game. Pomona-Pitzer did just that and got back within striking distance down two points at 63-61 with 2:32 to go. With the Sagehens needing a stop at a chance to tie, the Poets did a late jumper that put the lead at 68-63 with 10 seconds left on the clock and put the game out of reach to hand the Sagehens their first SCIAC loss of the season.
