Sagehens Defeat Chapman, Remain Undefeated In Conference Play

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team defeated Chapman 70-65 on Saturday night in Claremont.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 8-4 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens had three players that scored in double figures. Jadyn Lee had 16 points and ten rebounds, recording her sixth double-double this season, Abigail Homan had 14 points, and Kayla Malek scored a career-high 16 points, shooting an impressive seven for seven from the field.

The Sagehens came out strong in the first quarter with Charlize Andaya starting the game by draining a three-point shot. The Sagehens built a 17-10 lead over Chapman with five quick points for Malek off of the bench. Defensively, Andaya and Charlotte Patel made crucial blocks, while J. Lee dominated the boards, collecting several defensive rebounds to deny Chapman second-chance opportunities.

In the second quarter, Chapman came out strong, narrowing the gap with a 6-0 run, making the score 18-17 with the game's first lead change at the 7:30 mark. The Sagehens quickly responded with Malek getting to the cup for the hoop and harm but Chapman answered with a fastbreak layup, tying the game at 20. Both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, but Patel made a layup that extended the Sagehens lead to 30-25 with 1:38 remaining. Going into halftime, the score was 30-27 with the Sagehens on top. 

The Sagehens extended their lead early in the third quarter with a three-pointer by Emily Lee, assisted by Jadyn Lee, making it a six-point game. The Sagehens found success from beyond the arc and capitalized on Chapman turnovers, with fast-break points from Lee and a strong contribution from Sara Chicco, whose three-pointer extended the lead to 41-29.The third quarter ended with the Sagehens holding a 49-37 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Sagehens opened the period with Homan hitting a jumper, extending their lead to 51-37. Malek and J. Lee also capitalized on defensive rebounds and turnovers, scoring critical points in the paint to push the lead to 55-40. Chapman continued to battle but the Sagehens closed out the game with a great team victory with the final score being 70-65.
