Claremont, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team broke in their new field surface with a 28-12 win on opening night against Carleton College on Saturday at Merritt Field.
The Sagehens were led by
Grady Russo who threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Russo also led the rushing attack with 129 yards on the ground while
Brennan Dragomer had 67 yards as well.
Quinten Wimmer led the receiving core with nine catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns while Mathias Olson had five catches for 53 yards and a score as well.
David Gorman led the defense with seven total tackles while
Charlie Russo ended with six and
Thomas McConnell with five while
Eamon Glascott had a pick six for the Sagehen defense in the win.
The Sagehens dominated on offense with 28 first downs to Carleton's nine. The Sagehens also came up one rushing yard shy of 200 and passed for 207 while Carleton only had 224 yards of total offense.
Pomona-Pitzer got the scoring going in the first after a swing pass from Russo found Wimmer all alone for the score. Russo and Wimmer combined for another score early in the second quarter as Wimmer rose up and snatched a ball over a defender to double the Sagehens' lead at 14-0 with 13:38 left in the first half.
The Sagehen defense did a great job of keeping Carleton out of the endzone. The Knights had a chance to put points on the board but a missed kick heading into halftime left the Sagehens up 14-0.
The Sagehens were led scoreless in the third but scored in the first few minutes of the fourth as Olson grabbed a 15-yard touchdown pass from Russo to make it 21-0.
The Knights finally got on the board via special teams after they blocked a field goal attempt by the Sagehens and returned it for a touchdown to cut into the lead at 21-6.
Carleton tried to get the ball back and score on offense, but it was the Sagehen defense going the other way as Glascott picked off the quarterback and returned it 17 yards for the touchdown.
The Knights managed to score on the last play of the game for their only score on offense all night as the Sagehens put on a show for their home opener with the 28-12 victory.
