Sagehens Take Win Over Roos In 4 Sets

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team opened their first non-tournament game of the season with a 3-1 win over Austin College on Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 3-2 overall.

Paige Mountanos and Chloe Gill led the Sagehen attack with 19 and 17 kills while Gill hit .500 on the night 17-32. Gill also shared the team lead in blocks with teammate Kellan Hayes with three while Jenny Jenks dished out 47 assists and Corrina Benson dug out 18 balls.

Sagehens kept it close in set one against the Roos but a short run early in the match put Austin up 10-5 after four-straight points. After making that run, Austin kept a small lead and despite the Sagehens cutting the deficit down to 17-15, Austin held off the late run and came away with a 25-20 first-set victory.

Pomona-Pitzer came out in set two and immediately set the tone with a 5-0 run to start the second set. Austin stopped the run momentarily, but the Sagehens added four-straight points off of Austin errors to take an 18-8 lead. The Sagehens carried their large lead into an easy set-two win to even the score at 1-1.

Another good start for the Sagehens with an 8-2 run to start the third set. The Sagehens turned that into a 20-9 lead as they easily took a 2-1 lead with a 25-11 win.

With a chance to take the win in four, the Sagehens started well again with a 10-3 start. Pomona-Pitzer did a good job in sets 2-4 of getting ahead early and maintaining their large advantage over Austin College as they extended their lead to 20-13. The Roos cut the deficit down to five at 20-15 but the Sagehens closed out the match with five of the last seven points to claim their first regular season win outside of the Pacific Coast Classic.
