Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team fell in game one of their Saturday doubleheader against Puget Sound 3-1 but came back for a 3-0 win against Saint Vincent at Voelkel Gymnasium in the Whittier Invitational.
Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 4-3 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 1, Puget Sound 3
The Sagehens were led
Paige Mountanos who tallied 17 kills with
Chloe Gill earning 15 and
Samantha Grabb with 13.
Kellan Hayes led the defensive efforts at the net with six blocks while
Jenny Jenks had 52 assists and led the team in digs with 18.
Puget Sound came out with an early lead in set one at an 8-2 advantage. The Sagehens closed the gap to get it down to one point at 13-12, but the Loggers widened the gap backout to 17-12. Pomona-Pitzer flipped a switch in the first set and went on a 5-1 run to get back within a point at 18-17. The Sagehens closed out the first set strong and tied the set at 24-24 to force some extra volleyball in the first set. The Loggers had a chance to claim the first set up 27-26 but a kill by Gill tied the score at 27-27 and then back-to-back kills by Mountanos gave the Sagehens the game at 29-27.
After a set of runs to open the match, the second set was neck and neck the whole way through. The lead switched hands six times with the lead never exceeding more than two points. The Sagehens had the lead at 17-16, but the Loggers made the biggest run of the set with three-straight points to take the lead at 19-17. Pomona-Pitzer battled back and tied the set at 24-24, but Puget Sound ended the set with back-to-back kills to take set two, 26-24.
A wild start of runs to open the third set with Puget Sound jumping out to a 4-0 lead and the Sagehens immediately answering with four points of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Puget Sound then sparked a 5-0 run to make it 9-4 and eventually extended their lead to 21-12. The Sagehens came all the way back with a 10-2 run to get within a point at 23-22 and tied the game again qt 24-24, but the Loggers capitalized off of a service error and a kill and took a 2-1 lead.
Another really tight set between the two teams with Puget Sound clinging to a 15-13 lead. The Loggers went on to extend the lead to 20-16 while the Sagehens made a late run to try to extend the game down 22-20. Puget Sound was able to hold off the late run by Pomona-Pitzer with the final three points to hand the Sagehens the loss at home.

Mountanos led the squad with 16 kills while
Samantha Grabb had nine and
Tene Ariyo with six. Gabb also chipped in on the defensive front with two blocks along with
Charlotte Sekerka while Jenks came away with 41 assists and
Corrina Benson led the team with 23 digs in the win.
After suffering a loss earlier in the day, the Sagehens came out strong against the Bearcats not letting Saint Vincent exceed more than 15 points in any of the three sets. The Sagehens started with the lead in the first and then maintained their advantage throughout the set. After building a strong 18-13 lead, the Sagehens scored seven-straight points to finish off set one 25-13.
Saint Vicnent started with a lead to open the second set at 4-2, however, the lead was short lived as the Sagehens sparked an 8-1 run to take over the lead at 13-6. The Bearcats battled back with a few points to chip away at the lead, but the Sagehens came through the 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead.
More of the same for the Sagehens in set three after they started with an 11-4 lead and did not look back. Pomona-Pitzer scored in bunches against the Bearcats and quickly came away with a 3-0 sweep to end the day with a win at home to end the Whittier Invitational.
