CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team fell to SCIAC opponent CMS 3-0 on Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 5-6 overall and 0-1 to start SCIAC play.
Samantha Grabb and
Paige Mountanos led the way with seven kills each for the Sagehens while
Jenny Jenks had 18 assists and
Corrina Benson with 14 digs.
The Sagehens came out strong against the No. 10 ranked team in the nation and stayed with the Athenas tied at 8-8 in the first set. The Sagehens stayed slightly ahead of the Athenas at 12-11, but CMS turned the set around with a 6-2 run to take a 17-14 lead. The Sagehens made a late run of their own to tie the set at 24-24 looking to steal set one on the road, but CMS ended with the final two points and took a close first set 26-24.
CMS carried their momentum into the second set and began with a 10-3 lead. The Athenas went on to keep their large lead up 20-9 and went on to take set two comfortably at 25-14.
The Athenas started out strong again to grab and early lead to start the third set with the Sagehens climbing back into the game trailing by just one point at 12-11. CMS went on to regain control of the set with eight of the next nine points to take a 20-12 lead. CMS would go on to take all three sets to take the first leg of the Sixth Street Rivalry at Roberts Pavilion.
