Sagehens Open SCIAC Play With Draw To Whittier

CLAREMONT, CA. --   The No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team drew in their first SCIAC contest of the year 1-1 against Whittier College on Wednesday night at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: with the draw, the Sagehens move to 4-0-2 on the year and open the SCIAC 0-0-1.

The Sagehens were led by Spencer Deutz who netted the only goal for the Sagehens that came straight off of a corner in the draw.

The Sagehens had to come from behind to draw with the Poets at home but did so while outshooting the Poets 18-8 with nine shots on goal.  Whittier only fired off eight shots but did put seven of those shots on goal with Patricia DePalma picking up six saves.

Pomona-Pitzer had a few good looks early in the first half, but the Sagehens couldn't find an opening goal to take an early lead.  The Poets had a few shots from range but nothing too troubling for DePalma but a defensive miscue on the back line gave the Poets an open goal that they converted for the opening goal to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

After taking the lead in the first half, the Poets played defense for the final 45 minutes in search for the upset win against Pomona-Pitzer.  The Sagehens pressed high up the field looking for an equalizer and were able to convert one of their seven corners on the day as Deutz hit an Olympico from the corner to even the game at 1-1 in the 84th minute.

With the game getting tuned around, the Sagehens searched for the game-winning goal, but time ran out as the Sagehens opened SCIAC play with a draw.

Up Next: The Sagehens will head to Caltech on Saturday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m.
