SANTA CRUZ, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team came away with a 3-3 draw against Pacific Lutheran on Sunday morning on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.
Season Impact: With the draw, the Sagehens move to 0-1-1 to start the 2024 season.
The Sagehens were led by
Niclas Ulrich who scored the first goal of 2024 with a penalty and then followed up for his brace with a header as well.
Keyon Namdar had then other goal for the Sagehens while
Aidan MacLennan picked up an assist.
The Sagehens did a good job being selective with their shots with five in the first half and four of those on target. The Sagehens were able to jump ahead in the __ minute after a shot by
Alex Greenstein caught the outstretched arm of a defender giving the Sagehens a penalty opportunity. Ulrich stepped to the spot for the PK and buried it in the bottom right corner to take a 1-0 lead.
The defense stepped up big at the end of the first half to preserve the lead as the Lutes came on strong just before halftime with some scoring opportunities. A one-on-one effort by the Lutes went wasted with a shot that drilled the cross bar and just before halftime, a shot coming from a corner chance was cleared off the line by
Guy Fuchs to keep the 1-0 lead into halftime.
A lot of action in the second half that saw a total of five goals between the two teams. Getting the scoring going was the Sagehens after a breakthrough on the backline left Namdar one-on-one with the keeper and slotted it into the bottom corner to put the Sagehens up 2-0 in the 69
th minute.
The Lutes came storming back with two goals in three minutes to tie the game at 2-2 before the Sagehens got their third as Ulrich rose up above the defense off of a corner and headed home his brace to put the Sagehens back on top at 3-2 in the 82
nd.
Unfortunately, the Sagehens couldn't hang on to the lead as the Lutes tied the match just five minutes later as the Sagehens had to settle for a draw against Pacific Lutheran.
