CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a 13-10 win over CMS on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 30-10 overall and moved on to the next round of the SCIAC Tournament. This marks only the sixth team in program history to reach the 30-win mark for the Sagehens with the 2022 team also eclipsing a 30-win season.
The Sagehens were led by the newly crowned SCIAC Player of the Year, Isaac Kim, who went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. JC Ng, Nate Jakobs, and Cooper Berry all had two hits each while Greg Pierantoni, Jack Gold, and William Kinney had one. SCIAC Pitcher of the Year, Jake Hilton, got the start for game one of the tournament and picked up his ninth win of the season with seven innings, three runs given up and four strikeouts.
The Sagehens jumped on the board early in the bottom of the second as Berry doubled in Jimmy Legg to take a 1-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer then blew the game wide open with a 10-run fourth inning. The Sagehens earned 10 runs off of seven hits and RBIs from Berry, Nishimura, Kinney, Ng, Pierantoni, Legg, and Berry again to take an 11-0 lead over their conference rivals.
CMS finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as Hilton exited the game. A home run and a sacrifice fly plated two runs in the inning for the Stags, but the Sagehens got them right back in the bottom half of the frame with a home run from Kim to make it 13-2.
CMS rallied late with two runs in the eighth and six in the ninth, but Eric Prough slammed the door shut as the Sagehens moved on in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to La Verne on Friday, May 10th at 3:00 p.m.
