Sagehens Sweep Poets To End Regular Season

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team ended their regular season with a sweep over Whittier with a 13-1 win and a 7-6 win on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 29-12 overall and end conference play at 17-7.  The Sagehens finish the year in second place in the SCIAC and have earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

Pomona-Pitzer 13, Whittier 1

The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs who had a monster day at the plate with a 3-5 performance with eight RBIs, seven of them from a three-run homer and a grand slam. JC Ng and Jack Gold had a multi-hit game with two each while Isaac Kim, Greg Pierantoni, Jackson Fleming, and Matthew Nishimura had one.  Hannoh Seo got the start in game one and went five innings for his seventh win of the season while Jake Albro, Eddie Rosemont, and Weston Janavs came in to close the game out.

The Sagehens plated one run in the bottom of the first as Pierantoni drove in a run off of a sacrifice fly to allow the Sagehens to play from in front, 1-0.

Pomona-Pitzer came back for big innings in the third and fourth to get their lead over 10 runs. Ng and Jakobs brought home runners via the long ball with Ng hitting a solo shot and Jakobs with a three-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Sagehens responded with a six-run bottom of the fourth after Jakobs hit his second home run of the game with a grand slam followed by a two-run shot by Gold to put the Sagehens up 11-0 over Whittier.

The Poets broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth with a groundout to bring the lead down to 11-1, but the Sagehens got it back as Gold doubled down the line to bring home Pierantoni to push the lead to 12-1.

Jakobs capped off his monster night at the plate with an RBI single up the middle to bring in the 13th run of the game as the Sagehens took game one of the doubleheader.

Pomona-Pitzer 7, Whittier 6

The Sagehens had three players with two-hit games as Kim, Pierantoni, and Jimmy Legg all collected two hits in the win while Ng, Gold, Jackson Fleming, Peter Savas, and Cooper Berry, had one. Harry Deliyannis got the start in game two and went five innings for the no-decision while Ethan Collins came in for an inning of relief work and Wade Lawson came In late to pick up the win.

Pomona-Pitzer struck first with a run in each of the first two innings after Kim singled home Ng and Pierantoni got hit with the bases loaded for an RBI to put the Sagehens up 2-0.

Whittier came back with a big third inning with three runs to take their first lead of the day at 3-2.  The Poets added on with two more in the top of the fifth to force the Sagehens to make a comeback late in the game.

Pierantoni singled home Kim in the bottom of the fifth, but the Poets responded with another run in the top of the sixth to maintain a three-run lead at 6-3.

Pomona-Pitzer came all the way back with one swing of the bat as Gold blasted a three-run homer to right field to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

The Sagehens scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Legg doubled home Kim as the Sagehens ended their regular season on a high note to claim the second-place spot in the SCIAC this season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host the first round of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host the No. 3 seed CMS on Thursday, May 9th at 3:00 p.m.
