LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team suffered a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Occidental Tigers on the road on Friday afternoon.
Devin Waddell pitched a full game with 10 strikeouts, allowing five hits with 113 pitches. The Sagehens had four hits on the day but left 11 runners on base. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when they host the Tigers for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Tigers were able to strike early, using an RBI double down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens tried to counter but left two runners on in the second and one in the third, trailing the Tigers 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer had their best chance in the fifth inning after loading the bases with a single from
Lauren Ziment, a walk from
Devin Waddell, and later a hit by pitch from
Bella Carreon. After a fly out, the three runners were left stranded with Pomona-Pitzer still trailing 1-0.
The Sagehens gave themselves another chance in the sixth with
Natalie Murguia getting on first with a walk with
Emily Hurtado hitting a single down the left field line to put runners on first and second. A pop up and fly out ended the inning, leaving both runners stranded.
Pomona-Pitzer's last opportunity started with a leadoff walk from
Devin Waddell with
Summer Gibson reaching on a missed fielder's choice bunt play from the Tigers, putting the Sagehens in good position with runners on first and second with no outs. After
Bella Carreon successfully laid down the sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, a hard ground ball from
Kylie Liu resulted in
Devin Waddell getting thrown out at home before a groundout to second base from Bella Carreron ended the late comeback attempt with the Tigers earning the 1-0 victory.
