CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team moved within one win of advancing to the NCAA Super Regional after a doubleheader win over Willamette capped off with a
Jack Gold walk-off homer in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After being down 1-0 in their best-of-five series with the Bearcats, the Sagehens came back for an 11-5 win in game one and a 10-7 win in game two to improve to 34-12 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Willamette 5
The Sagehen were led by
JC Ng who went 4-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Greg Pierantoni,
Nate Jakobs, and
Jack Gold all had two hits as well in the win with
Jimmy Legg and
Matthew Nishimura getting one hit each.
Hannoh Seo got the ball for game two of the series and picked up his ninth win of the season with six innings pitched four runs surrendered and four strikeouts.
Eric Prough finished off the game with his fourth save of the season.
The Sagehens were the visiting team for game two of the series and struck first with a two-RBI single from Legg to play from in front, 2-0. Kim tacked on one more in the second inning with a sac fly to push the lead to 3-0 and did the same in the fourth to make it 4-0 before Willamette got on the board.
The Bearcats got their first run of the ballgame in the fourth off of a passed ball and came back with two more in the fifth off of a two-run shot to cut the lead down to one at 4-3.
The Sagehens answered back with a home run of their own from Pierantoni to take a 5-3 lead, but the Bearcats came back with one in the sixth to bring it back to one at 5-4.
Gold and Ng blew the game open in the seventh as Gold started with a solo shot to right and Ng blasted a three-run bomb to right field as well to put the Sagehens on top 9-4.
Willamette came back with another run in the seventh and the Sagehens put a stamp on game one with another home run by Jakobs to even the series at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Willamette 7
The Sagehens were led by Gold who had a game to remember with two home runs including the walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Peter Savas went 3-3 at the plate while Ng went 2-4 with Kim, Pierantoni, and
Lateef Wakil also earning hits as well.
Harry Deliyannis got the ball for game three and went 6 innings with four runs given up and six strikeouts for the no-decision.
Wade Lawson bridged the gap out of the pen with two solid innings of relief work while Prough ended up getting the win by pitching the ninth.
Willamette jumped ahead in this one in the top of the second with the first run of the game coming off of an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats added on with three more In the third to take a big 4-0 lead early on in the ballgame.
Pomona-Pitzer responded in their next at-bats with two runs in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI singles from Ng and Pierantoni to cut into the lead at 4-2.
Deliyannis settled in on the mound and pitched a few scoreless frames to allow the Sagehens to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Kim blasted a three-run homer to center field and Gold followed with a solo shot to put the Sagehens on top 6-4.
The Sagehens added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Wakil blasted his first career home run to make it a three-run lead at 7-4. That run would prove to be huge as the Bearcats got the first two runners of the ninth on and hit a game-tying three-run homer to even the game at 7-7.
After giving up a chance to win the game in the top of the ninth, the Sagehens showed an incredible amount of resiliency as they put their first two runners of the inning on and Gold came through with one of the biggest swings in program history for his second home run of the game to put Pomona-Pitzer one win away from a trip to the Super Regional.
