CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team advanced to the Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament after their 24-10 win over Willamette to take the Regional Series 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 35-12 overall and advanced to the Super Regional for the first time in program history.
The Sagehens brought the bats out with a chance to clinch the series and tallied 23 hits for 24 runs in the ballgame.
Greg Pierantoni led the team with an incredible 6-7 performance while
JC Ng went 4-5 and set the Single Season Program Record for Runs with 68 in today's game.
Lateef Wakil tallied three hits in the win while
Isaac Kimm
Nate Jakobs,
Peter Savas, and
William Kinney had two, and
Jack Gold and
Jimmy Legg, had one.
Ethan Collins got the rock for the Sunday start and five innings for this third win of the year. Collins gave up four runs with six strikeouts as the Sagehens gave plenty of run support.
Jake Albro,
Jack Wiessinger, and
Eddie Rosemont closed out the game for the Sagehens out of the pen.
The Sagehens got going in their first at-bats as the visiting team for today's game with an RBI double from Pierantoni to take a 1-0 lead.
Wakil scored the second run with a steal and an error to come around to score to extend the lead to 2-0 through two innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer then started to build its big lead with a six-run third inning that saw a home run by Kim, a two-RBI single by Wakil, and a two-RBI single from Ng to take an 8-0 lead.
The Sagehens extended the lead up to 10-0 in the fourth with RBIs from Savas and Kinney before the Bearcats got on the board with a bases-loaded double to make it 10-3.
RBIs from Legg, Gold, and Savas pushed the lead back up to 14-3 with Willamette answering again with one more in the fifth to make it 14-4.
Jakobs got one more run in for the Sagehens in the sixth and then a huge seven-run seventh inning for Pomona-Pitzer broke the game wide open with a 22-4 lead.
However, the Bearcats continued to fight with a three-run homer to make it 22-7 while Ng and Jakobs responded in the eighth with RBIs to make it a 24-run game for the Sagehens in the NCAA Tournament.
Willamette went down swinging with three more runs in the ninth, but the Sagehens closed out the Bearcats in four games and punched their ticket to the NCAA Super Regionals.
