CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in game one of their five-game NCAA Regional Round matchup 13-8 against Willamette University on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 32-12 overall and drop game one of the series to the Bearcats.
The Sagehens were led by
Jimmy Legg who went 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Isaac Kim and
Greg Pierantoni also had a multi-hit game while
JC Ng,
Nate Jakobs,
Peter Savas, and
William Kinney had one each.
Jake Hilton got the ball in game one and went five innings giving up five runs off of six hits with six walks and eight strikeouts. Eamon Woods came in for Hilton and gave up seven runs with
Jake Albro and
Max Brunngraber coming in late in the game.
The Bearcats struck first in the third with a three-run inning off of two RBI singles and a walk with the bases loaded to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Sagehens responded in their next at-bats with an RBI single from Kim to make it 3-1 and then a sacrifice fly in the fourth by Kinney to cut the lead down to one run at 3-2.
Willamette got those two runs back in the fifth with a two-RBI single to make it 5-2 and then the Bearcats exploded with eight runs in the sixth to break the game open. Willamette put eight runs on the board coming off of seven hits with two left on base to take a 13-2 lead over the Sagehens heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Sagehens got a few more runs home in the later innings with an RBI single from Kinney and two solo home runs from Kim and Legg to cut the lead down to 13-5 heading into the final inning of play.
The Sagehens showed life late and plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth with RBIs from Legg,
Ben Cohen, and Savas but the Bearcats closed out the Sagehens and took game one of the Regional Series.
