Sagehens Drop Final Game of Series with Panthers on Sunday Afternoon

ORANGE, Ca. – The Sagehen Softball team dropped the final game of the three game series 1-0 to the Chapman Panthers on Sunday afternoon, dropping to 11-15 on the season and 3-5 in conference play. Devin Waddell pitched six full innings with 118 pitches in the contest, recording eighth strikeouts on the day. Pomona-Pitzer was held to three hits with Summer Gibson, Devin Waddell, and Brooke Bullis all recording one hit in the game with Waddell recording a double. The Sagehens will be back in action on Apr. 12 when they host the La Verne Leopards at 3:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Panthers had a dangerous opportunity in the first inning after a walk started the inning with a fielder's choice ball resulting in a runner on first and one on third. After a stolen base put runners on second and third, a groundout and a strikeout from Waddell kept things locked at 0-0.

In the second inning, Brooke Bullis started the inning with a single to center field, but three-straight fly outs left Bullis stranded. A strikeout started the bottom of the second for the Panthers but a hit by pitch, stolen base, and wild pitch put a runner on third for the Panthers. Chapman was able to lay down an RBI bunt for a single to bring the runner across home plate, giving Chapman a 1-0 lead. The Panthers had bases loaded with a chance to add more runs to the board, but another strikeout followed by a cleanly grounded ball from Bella Carreon at short stop ended the inning.

The Sagehens had their best chance to counter in the fourth inning after Summer Gibson started the inning with a single to left field before Devin Waddell recorded a double to right center to advance Gibson to third, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. Unfortunately, the Sagehens went down in order from there with a foul out, ground out, and fly out to end the inning. Chapman tried to add insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth after two singles and a walk loaded the bases but a ground out to second base kept things at 1-0.

Both teams went hitless for the remainder of the seven inning contest with Chapman holding off the Sagehens to hand Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 loss.
