CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team improved to 11-1 on the season and 8-0 in conference play after a 23-5 victory over the Occidental Tigers on Saturday night.
Fiona Lewis led the team with five goals while
Sydney Landauer and
River Buechner each had four goals on the night. Landauer led the team in points overall with four assists in addition to the four goal game while picking up four ground balls.
Chloe Boudreau led the team on defense, forcing four turnovers while earning one ground ball. The Sagehens will be back in action on Apr. 13 when they travel to Chapman at 11:00 a.m.
How It Happened
The Tigers struck first in the Saturday night match up, firing one into the back of the net just 30 seconds after a free position shot to take a 1-0 lead over the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer responded with four-straight goals with
River Buechner,
Fiona Lewis,
Grace Warner, and
Shoshi Henderson all earning a goal to give the Sagehens a 4-1 lead. The Tigers managed to fight back, outscoring the Sagehens 4-2 in the last 6:30 of the first quarter, cutting Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 6-5 with
Sydney Landauer and
Grace Tighe scoring the other two goals for the Sagehens.
The second quarter was dominated by the Sagehens as they scored seven unanswered goals to carry a 13-5 into halftime. The second quarter goals were earned by Lewis, Buechner,
Taylor Glanville, Warner,
Hannah Gough,
Chloe Denhart, and Landauer.
Out of the halftime break, the Sagehens continued to control play as
Fiona Lewis scored 28 seconds into the third quarter before
Sydney Landauer scored back-to-back goals to make it 16-5.
Chloe Denhart and
Shoshi Henderson both found the back of the net to increase the Sagehen lead to 18-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
River Buchner increased the Sagehen lead to 19-5 with a goal 1:04 into the fourth quarter as the Sagehens continued to strike after a closely contested first quarter. Buechner connected with the back of the net again, this time with 9:07 on the clock to give the Sagehens their 20th goal of the contest for a 20-5 lead.
Fiona Lewis added two more goals down the stretch before
Audrey Jacklyn scored the final goal of the contest to seal the 23-5 victory over the Tigers on Saturday night.
