No. 6 Sagehens Take Game One Over No. 12 La Verne

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened their season series with a 10-4 win over No. 12 La Verne on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact
: with the win, the Sagehens take the top spot in the SCIAC and improved to 23-6 overall and 11-2 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim who went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in the win with his eighth home run of the year. William Kinney also had a multi-hit game going 2-3 with two runs scored while Greg Pierantoni, Nate Jakobs, and Jimmy Legg had one.

Jake Hilton got his usual Friday start and improved to 8-1 overall on the season with five innings, three hits, four runs, none of them earned, and three strikeouts. Eamonn Woods came in for a relief role for the final four innings and pitched four scoreless frames with seven strikeouts.

The Leopards had their only offensive production in the top of the third as they loaded the bases against Hilton.  The Sagehens had a chance to get out of the inning with no runs surrendered, but a defensive miscue allowed the bases to clear and gave La Verne a gift with a 4-0 lead in the third.

Pomona-Pitzer rallied back in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs of their own to take the lead. The Sagehens loaded the bases and got their first run via walk and then a Kim double plated two more while a walk, hit by pitch, and an error by the La Verne defense put the Sagehens up 7-0 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens and Kim added on again in the fourth with a solo shot to center field to extend the lead to 8-4.  Pomona-Pitzer went on to put two more runs on the board from good base running in the sixth and seventh innings while a great job out of the pen by Woods allowed the Sagehens to take game one of a very important SCIAC series.

Up Next: The Sagehens will finish their series at La Verne with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6th at 11:00 a.m.
