CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split with the CMS Athenas on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 5-2 while earning a 3-2 extra innings victory to end the series. The Sagehens are now 16-19 on the season and 8-10 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on May 3 at 3:00 p.m. when they travel to Occidental.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, CMS 5
The Athenas came out swinging in game one, using a two-run homer and an RBI single to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A third inning RBI double and fifth inning RBI single increased the Athenas lead to 5-0.
The Sagehens made a later push in the sixth inning to fight back in the game as
Kylie Liu hit an RBI double to bring in
Bella Carreon to cut the CMS lead to 5-1.
Claire Sefkow continued the attack with an RBI single down the right field line to make it 5-2 but the comeback fell short as CMS held the Sagehens scoreless in the seventh to take game one 5-2.
Pomona-Pitzer 3, CMS 2 – 11 innings
Game two of the day was a defensive battle as the Sagehens and Athenas battled through five scoreless innings with
Erika Rivera pitching a complete game with 11 innings, facing 42 batters. Rivera forced 18 flyouts and 11 groundouts while allowing eight hits and two runs with two strikeouts through the 11 innings.
The Athenas finally broke the scoring drought in the sixth inning with an RBI walk but the Sagehens countered nearly in the exact same way as
Brooke Bullis got hit by a pitch to score a run in the top of the seventh to tie things at 1-1. In the 10th innings,
Devin Waddell recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to bring home
Morgan Groves and take a 2-1 lead. The Athenas were able to extend the contest with an RBI single to center field, tying things at 2-2.
The Sagehens scored once again, this time with
Bella Carreon recording an RBI single to right field to bring
Summer Gibson across the plate in the 11th inning. Rivera closed out the contest as the Athenas started the inning with a sacrifice bunt for out one before a groundout and line out ended things with the Sagehens earning a 3-2 victory in game two.
